          Born in New York City on July 6, 1900, she was the youngest child of Russian Jewish immigrants. Her mother, Agnes Zagorska, came from a merchant family and was a graduate of Moscow University. Frederica's father, Arnold Zagorsky, had to leave Moscow due to a decree prohibiting Jews from residing without a permanent address.
